STONE, Staffordshire, February 2, 2026, Local roads became safer today after a police checkpoint in Stone revealed a series of serious driving offenses, as part of Staffordshire Police’s ongoing Operation Lightning initiative.

The Staffordshire Road Harm Prevention Team conducted the operation this morning, stopping vehicles and identifying numerous infractions that pose risks to all road users. According to a post from the team, the checkpoint resulted in: three overweight vehicles, four uninsured vehicles which were subsequently seized, two defective tyres, two instances of driving without a licence, three mobile phone uses, two failures to wear seatbelts, and two insecure loads. “These all share the roads with you and need dealing with to make them safer,” the team stated, emphasizing the importance of such enforcement actions.

Photos from the scene show officers inspecting vehicles in a parking area, including a marked police car and motorcycle alongside stopped civilian vehicles, as well as what appears to be seized items like a silver Toyota and a mud-covered electric bicycle.

Operation Lightning, launched by Staffordshire Police, focuses on enhancing road safety by targeting criminal use of roads and reducing fatalities through proactive policing. The campaign includes efforts to address the “Fatal Four” offenses – speeding, drink or drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, and using a mobile phone – which are leading causes of serious collisions across the UK. Several of the violations uncovered in Stone align with these priorities, such as mobile phone use and seatbelt non-compliance.

Past phases of Operation Lightning have led to significant results, including hundreds of arrests and vehicle stops, demonstrating the force’s commitment to deterring dangerous driving behaviors. Authorities urge drivers to comply with road laws to prevent accidents and protect lives.

Staffordshire Police encourages by public to report concerns via their website or by calling 101 for non-emergencies. In emergencies, dial 999.
