Heavy Rain Causes Flooding Across Staffordshire, with Roads, Parks and Cars Submerged

Persistent heavy rainfall over the weekend has led to widespread flooding throughout Staffordshire, affecting towns, villages, and rural areas, with reports of submerged cars, flooded streets, and inundated parks. The deluge has overwhelmed drainage systems, raised river levels and prompted multiple flood alerts from the Environment Agency as saturated ground struggled to absorb more water.

In Stafford, dramatic scenes emerged with vehicles partially underwater in car parks such as the Doxey Road Long Stay area, where deep floodwater trapped cars against barriers. Children's play areas in local parks turned into shallow lakes with swings and slides surrounded by water, while streets in low-lying neighbourhoods became impassable rivers of brown floodwater. Similar issues have been reported across the county, including localised surface water flooding in Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme and surrounding districts, where drivers faced submerged roads.

In the Cannock area and southern parts of the county, flash flooding impacted low-lying spots, with roads closed, including sections of the A5 and A460 Eastern Way due to standing water. Communities near rivers like the Sow, Penk, and others saw rising levels leading to warnings of possible inundation of properties and highways.

The Environment Agency has flood alerts in place for various brooks and rivers, including the Lower Dove Brooks, River Sow and Penk and areas around Cannock Chase fringes, highlighting risks to land and roads.

Motorists across Staffordshire have been urged to avoid flooded routes as even shallow water can pose serious hazards to vehicles. No widespread major injuries have been reported, but emergency services, including fire crews, have dealt with calls related to the flooding. Council teams are working on pumping operations and debris clearance, with recovery expected to take days in the worst-hit spots.
