Staffordshire County Council has announced that Councillor Chris Large is stepping down from his role as Reform UK group leader and as cabinet member for finance and resources following a family bereavement.

Large, who represents the Brewood division in South Staffordshire, was appointed to replace the previous group leader, Ian Cooper, who resigned in December amid a social media controversy.  He had been expected to assume the full council leadership role at the next meeting on February 12.  However, the bereavement has prompted Large to prioritise his family, leading to his immediate resignation from these key positions.

In a statement, Acting Leader of the Council Martin Murray praised Large’s contributions, noting that he had done “a tremendous job” in his finance role and thanking him for his efforts in the council’s budget and efficiency reviews.  Murray will now appoint a new cabinet member for finance and resources in the coming days.

Large will continue serving as a county councillor for Brewood, ensuring representation for his constituents remains uninterrupted.  The council emphasised that family comes first, and Large’s decision reflects this priority.  No further details about the bereavement were provided, respecting the family’s privacy.
